It was established in 1949 as Australia’s national security service. The role and responsibility of ASIO is to protect and safeguard Australia, it’s people and interests from terrorism, espionage, sabotage, any politically-motivated violence and attacks on any Australian Defence Systems.
ASIO officers are not armed. ASIO head office is in Canberra with it’s branch offices in other state and territory capital city. ASIO is the only Australian intelligence agency which both collects and assesses security intelligence. ASIO falls under Attorney-General’s Department and reports to Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security. The head of ASIO is the Director-General of Security.

Working for ASIO or Australian Security Intelligence Organisation maybe good, but applying to work for ASIO is bit time consuming and frustrating it will take at least 6 months to 12 months. It is very traditional, primitive to our modern day time and not very affective, as the potential bright officers will not wait 12 months and that also uncertain about the job offer.
Six to twelve months is too long and its time wasting by ASIO to go through and check the top level security clearance of a person, it just shows lack of productivity and waste of budget by ASIO. If ASIO takes least 6 to 12 months to see a person is fit with high level security clearance, then how long will it take to find or catch a person or terrorist who is threat to Australia and its interest(s).
ASIO with access to all the general and classified information and should at the most take 1 to 2 months and within three months should have already recruited the newbie plus completion of initial introductory training and heading towards probie stage. In the next 6 to 12 months should be already collecting, gathering or even educating oneself in identifying the possible threat or even the terrorist and its movements.
Modifying ASIO’s recruiting process and working style, allowing the officers to carry fire arms will definitely strengthen the organisation and will be moving a step forward in the history of ASIO. Hire people belonging to different age group rather than just the ones in their 20s, natural thinkers, adding to ASIO’s asset for present need is more people who have knowledge, understanding and experience with Eastern European, African, Middle Eastern and Asian culture.

ASIO – Australian Security Intelligence Organisation in their recent ads had removed their degree qualification requirement, which is a good thing as it may not necessary attract the possible best person for the job. Some are academic and some are practical. Spying is known to be the second oldest profession in the history of mankind. Well in the olden days there was no university, not everyone had access to learning and education like today, unless you were born into some noble or royal families. It is good to have a spy with a degree, but good to have option with or without a degree, as sometimes a person may not hold a degree in anything but could be great intelligence officer, analyst, linguist, thinker, leadership with great discerning and decision making capabilities. ASIO should look more for the people with the above skills.
ASIO’s aim is to increase its staff to about 1860 by 2010-11 with the new central office on its way in Russell Canberra and offices in every capital cities through out Australia. ASIO seems to have majority of young staff and most of them only been working for few years, between 1-3 years and lacking senior and experience staff. While it is peaceful Australia, ASIO needs to hire the best or trained the new ones to be the best either way it needs to speed up the organisation and be ready and prepared to meet the need to protect and secure Australia from any possible threat or attack.
Good news, ASIO will be given to carry firearms, ASIS will be given a green light to carry out paramilitary style operation(s) to complete their mission overseas and more power to our home brand AFP, olden days Commonwealth Police, but AFP is much better, bigger and wiser.
