David Barker, Liberal Party candidate for the seat of Chifley in Sydney’s west refused to back away from controversial remarks he made about Muslims and the atheist views of Prime Minister Julia Gillard. Mr Barker has been replaced by Venus Priest, a small business owner and former nurse who immigrated to Australia from the Philippines 15 years ago.
David who calls himself a “man of strong Christian faith” used his Facebook page to accuse Labor moving Australia closer to being a Muslim country. Mr Barker, in his letter to local Christian leaders seeking their support pointed out Ms Gillard is an “atheist” and his opponent in Chifley, Ed Husic was a Muslim. A bold Mr Barker told the ABC, “I am not anti-Muslim and believed every one should have their own beliefs,” but there should not be a Muslim in Parliament.
